Being Together

Grace Ndiritu

06/05 - 05/06/2022

Opening: Thu. May 5th, 16h00-21h00

Kenyan-British artist Grace Ndiritu (1982) has long explored the artistic potential of alternative, rural lifestyles, post-hippie culture, shamanism, interdisciplinary and political activism. Her work spans various media: film/video, photography, fashion, painting, performance and texts. For KRIEG?, Ndiritu will add a new chapter to her ongoing research on how humans live together, through the debut exhibition of An Idealized History (2007), a filmic tableau which examines two different points in history; from the beginning of Western civilization as seen through the use of a reproduction Greek temple in San Francisco to the apocalyptic future/end of civilization as seen through Burning Man, a contemporary neo-tribe gathering in Nevada.

To accompany the video installation for An Idealized History, KRIEG? has commissioned a new vinyl window installation, altering the viewpoint of KRIEG?’s external view to depict the landscape surrounding the creative community of Drop City in Trinidad, Colorado. Drop City is now recognized as the first rural commune of the 1960s, and its early experiments with utopian architecture have informed Ndiritu social practice projects such as The Ark Centre For Interdisciplinary Experimentation and videos series Community on view at Arcade, Brussels for the duration of the KRIEG exhibition. These silent videos explore the architecture and ritual spaces of some of the communes where Ndiritu has lived in Scotland; such as Findhorn, an ecovillage near Inverness, The Salisbury Centre in Edinburgh and the Hare Krishna ashram in rural Lesmahagow.

A public program will be developed around the video installation and a new book titled Being Together. A Manual for Living will be published by KRIEG?, depicting a series of nine radical pedagogical experiments designed by Ndiritu, to be released on the occasion of the exhibition.
